Max is an imaginative and energetic young boy who is always up for a good adventure. One night, after causing a ruckus in his wolf suit, his mother scolds him and calls him a “WILD THING.” Max jokingly threatens to eat her up, and his mother sends him to bed without dinner.
As Max lies in bed, he begins to imagine a world beyond his room. Suddenly, the walls and ceiling of his room start to transform into a dense forest with vines hanging from the ceiling. An ocean tumbles by and a private boat appears, ready for Max to embark on a journey to the land of the wild things.
Max sets sail, navigating through day and night, weeks and months, until he reaches the place where the wild things are. The wild things are initially frightened by Max’s bravery, but they soon realize that he is not like any other creature they have ever met. They roar their terrible roar and gnash their terrible teeth, but Max, using his imagination, stares into all their yellow eyes without blinking once. The wild things are frightened by Max’s bravery, and they soon make him the king of all wild things.
Max is thrilled to be king, and he starts a wild rumpus, playing and having fun with the wild things. However, Max soon realizes that he is lonely and wants to be where he is loved. He decides to leave the land of the wild things and return to his room.
The wild things try to convince Max to stay, but he is determined to return home. He steps into his private boat and sets sail, navigating through day and night, weeks and months, until he reaches his room. When he arrives, he finds his hot dinner waiting for him, and he is filled with joy.
Max’s grand adventure to the land of the wild things teaches him the importance of imagination, bravery, and being loved. He returns home with a newfound appreciation for his mother, his room, and his hot dinner.
