Dummling thought that he could some day prove himself to his family members, and one afternoon, he got the chance to do so.

His older brother decided he’d go into the woods to chop some wood for a fireplace. Before the eldest son ventured into the forest, his mother gave him a sweet cake and a bottle of milk.

“You will need this so you don’t grow hungry or thirsty, ” she said.

The son thanked his mother, said goodbye to his brother, father, and Dummling, and walked into the forest. While he was walking, he was approached by an old man wearing gray clothes. He had a lengthy beard, and he was really dirty. He had dirt under his finger nails, in his hair, and, the son suspected, in between his toes.

“Hello, young man, ” the old beggar said. “I see you possess some food with you. Please, I have not eaten all day. Will you share some of it with me? “

The young man considered the old beggar for a second, and then he shook his head.

“If I give you my cake and milk, then I will have non-e for myself, so no . ”

The old man was unhappy, but he let the young man pass. The son began to slice down a big tree for his firewood, and he was about a quarter of a way through, when he by accident cut his arm with his axe. The injury was very deep, and the son made the decision he should return home to have it bandaged up. When he get back, his mother washed his wound and bandaged it up.

“We still require firewood, ” the father said.

So the second oldest son self volunteered to complete cutting down the tree. His mother gave him a sweet cake and a container of milk.

“You will need this so that you don’t grow hungry or thirsty, ” she said.

The 2nd eldest son thanked his mother, said good bye to his brother, father, and Dummling, and headed into the forest. While he was walking, he was greeted by the same old beggar that had approached the oldest son. He was shocked by how dirty the old man was, and he thought he smelled extremely terrible.

“Hello, young man, ” the old beggar said. “I see you have some food with you. Please, I haven’t eaten all day. Will you share some of it with me? “

The young man considered the old beggar for a moment, and then, he shook his head.

“If I offer you my pastry and milk, then I will have none for myself, so no . “

The old man was frustrated, but he allow the young man pass.

The son found the tree which his elderly brother had started to chop, and he continued the job. After several big strokes of his axe, the man’s hands slipped and he unexpectedly cut his leg. The cut in his leg was serious and bleeding terribly. He was upset that he could not finish cutting the tree, but he decided that he should come back home to have it wrapped up.

“Oh, my! ” the father exclaimed, when his 2nd son came home. “Are non-e of my sons good enough to chop down a tree? “

At this, Dummling approached his father and said he would proceed and complete the task. Dummling’s brothers laughed. His mother smirked, and his father sighed deeply. He did not want to leave the duty to Dummling, however he had no other sons left. He gave Dummling permission to chop down the wood, and his mother started packing him a meal. The only cake she had left was a burned up piece that sat in the coals of her cooktop, and since she didn’t have any milk left, she provided her son a bottle of old apple cider.

“You will require this so you don’t grow hungry or thirsty, ” she said.

Dummling thanked his mother, said farewell to his two brothers and his father, and walked into the forest. While he was wandering, he was approached by the very same beggar that had irritated his two brothers.

“Hello, young man, ” the old beggar said. “I see you possess some meals along with you. Please, I have not eaten all day long. Will you share some of it with me? “

Dummling considered the old beggar for a second. He saw how slim and unclean he was, and he saw the needy look in his eyes. He felt badly for the old man.

“I would like to share my cake as well as cider with you, sir” Dummling said, “but I’m not sure you will enjoy it very much. The cake is burned, and the cider is old. “

The old beggar smiled and said not to worry. He was not a fussy eater.

Dummling and the old guy sat down in the leaves to enjoy their meal, and Dummling was surprised to find out that when he opened his bag, his burnt cake had been transformed into a fine, thick cake, and his cider and been changed into a sweet, creamy milk.

Before the old man left, he informed Dummling that after he cut down his brother’s trees, he’d get a treasure sitting at the roots. Dummling chopped intensely at the tree, and soon, he felled it.

Sitting near the roots was a golden goose. It ruffled its golden feathers and squawked at Dummling. He picked it up, and since night was falling, Dummling located a small tavern where he could spend the night.

The tavern keeper had 3 daughters, who were all curious girls. They were all captivated by the golden goose that their newest guest had brought in.

When all was quiet for the night, the first daughter entered down-stairs and thought to pluck a golden feather from the goose. As soon as her fingers touched the goose, she became stuck to the feather. Regardless how hard she dragged away, she remained stuck. Her second sister came down-stairs and went to tap her sister on the shoulder to inquire her what was wrong. The moment her finger touched her sister’s shoulder, she became trapped. It was as if magical glue held them fast together.

When the third sister arrived downstairs, all of them screamed at her, “Go away! Don’t touch us! “

The sister did not listen, and she got stuck as well.

When Dummling walked on the ground floor the following morning, he was re-signed to take the three daughters with him, together with his goose.

The poor girls were pushed to follow Dummling where ever he went. As Dummling and the three girls were walking through village, a priest saw the unusual procession. He yelled at the girls to stop following a young man; it was embarrassing behavior. When he grabbed onto the hand of the 3rd daughter, he became stuck, to become part of the silly procession.

The priest called out for help from the townspeople. Only two people reacted farmers who were working out in the field. They attempted to pull the poor priest away, but they grew to become stuck as well. Dummling was now accompanied by his goose, three girls, a priest, and two farmers.

Now, Dummling didn’t know this, but the king of this land had a little princess who never laughed. It was rumored absolutely nothing on this planet could possibly make her smile, and the king promised his daughter to any man that could make her laugh.

Well, as Dummling, his golden goose and the procession of disgrun-tled people walked by the fortress, she started to laugh so hard tears streamed down her face. She had never ever seen anything at all so silly.

The king instantly summoned Dummling forward, but he was not really pleased with the young man. He did not want him to marry his little princess, so he gave him a new challenge. “If you are able to produce for me a man that will drink every barrel of wine in my cellar, you may marry my daughter. “

Dummling had no clue exactly where he might locate such a man, but he chose to go back to the tree stump where he previously found the golden goose.

When Dummling got there, he saw a destitute man sitting on the old tree stump. He asked him what was wrong.

“I am the weakest guy in this land, ” he said with a frown. “I am so dehydrated that my tongue feels like sandpaper. My throat is a desert. I could drink a hundred barrels of wine. “

Dummling introduced the destitute man back to the castle with him, and when the man was brought into the king’s cellar, he drank every single barrel of wine.

The king was very angry that Dummling had finished his task, and he decided to give him yet another one.

“If you can produce a man that will eat each and every loaf of breads in my bakery, you may marry my daughter. “

Being unsure of where to locate such a man, Dummling went back to the tree stump where he located the golden goose. When Dummling got there, he did find a destitute man seated on the old tree stump. He questioned him what was wrong.

“I am the poorest man in this planet, ” he said with a frown. “I am so starving my tastebuds have died. My tummy is an empty drum. I could eat a 100 loaves of bread. “

Dummling brought the destitute man back to the castle with him, and when the man was taken to the king’s bakery, he consumed each and every loaf of bread.

The King was puzzled. He screamed at Dummling, “The only way I will allow you to marry my daughter is if you travel back here on a ship that can travel over land. “

Dummling came back to his tree stump yet again, where he was very happy to see the old man looking forward to him.

“Since you were so kind to me before and shared your food with me, I will help you, ” he said. Outside the forest, you will find your ship. ” Dummling thanked the old man, and when he sailed up to the castle doors on his ship, the king conceded and permit Dummling get married to his daughter, the lovely little princess. She and Dummling lived in happiness from then on, for he made her laugh everyday.
